Lilli Welcke’s second goal of the weekend with two minutes remaining gave Germany a 1-0 win over Hungary in the final game of the Women’s European Cup of Nations in Fussen on Sunday. The Germans finished the four-team, round-robin tournament undefeated. France (2-1) finished second, followed by Hungary (1-2) and Norway (0-3).
“These kinds of games are important for us to continue developing,” said German coach Jeff MacLeod. “We wanted to try different things during the week and give the players the opportunity to showcase their skills in every game. The team showed great character again today. A win is always nice, of course, but what was more important for us was that we continue to develop as a team and take something away from every game.”
Lisa Hemmerle got the shutout for the winners while Svenja Voigt was named player of the game. “We had a bit of a hard time getting into the game at the beginning,” Voigt added. “It was a very back-and-forth game, and the Hungarians played well. So it was all the more satisfying that we were able to score towards the end and finish the game so well. We tried out a lot of things this week and had some new faces in the lineup.”
MacLeod used three goalies over the weekend. Chiara Schultes was the winning ‘tender in the opening game in which both Lilli and twin sister Luisa Welcke scored in a 3-2 win over France. Manon le Scodan and Clara Rozier scored for the French.
In Germany’s second game, a 4-2 win over Norway, they scored twice in the third to break a 2-2 tie. Mathea Fischer and Emilie Kruse scored for the Norwegians, who fought back from deficits of 1-0 and 2-1.
Hungary opened with an impressive win against Norway, 8-0, scoring six times in the third period. Aniko Nemeth had the shutout while Taylor Baker, in her return to the national team, had a goal and three assists.
France defeated Hungary on the second day, 2-1, and that proved the difference between second and third place. The Hungarians opened the scoring, but Le Scodan and Rozier both responded to give the French an important win.
Hartje shines for the Slovaks, home team takes first place
In Bardejov, meanwhile, the hosts Slovakia recorded three impressive wins by a cumulative score of 18-3 to top their tournament. Led by Barbora Sibertova’s two goals, they began with a 5-2 win over Austria, and followed with a 5-1 win over Italy. The Italians brought a mostly inexperienced team to the tournament but still managed a 3-1 win over the Netherlands on the first day. Aurora Abatangel was the star, scoring twice and adding an assist.
The Slovaks put on an impressive display of scoring as a dozen different players scored at least once over the weekend. Elle Hartje had two goals and four assists while Sibertova had three goals.
Despite sending a secondary team, the Austrians still managed to finish second thanks to wins over the Netherlands, 2-0, and Italy, 3-1. In the former, Anja Adamitsch got the shutout, and in the latter Lena Daubock scored twice.
