Swiss forward Sven Andrighetto has capped off a sensational season at home and internationally by being named the IIHF’s Male Player of the Year for 2024-25. He received 34.6% of the votes, easily beating out American goalie Jeremy Swayman, who had 18.6%.

In third was Czechia’s David Pastrnak (18%), followed by Denis Malgin (Switzerland, 11.1%), Clayton Keller (United States, 8.8%), and Nathan MacKinnon (Canada, 6.5%). American Tage Thompson also received a vote.

All of the players who were given votes this year were first-time nominees for the trophy, now in its third year. Previous winners include Connor Bedard (Canada, 2023) and Roman Cervenka (Czechia, 2024).

Andrighetto will receive his award from IIHF president Luc Tardif at a time and location to be determined.

Andrighetto led his country to the gold-medal game at the recently-completed World Championship, winning a silver medal. He was second in tournament goal-scoring with seven, including four in one game against Germany. As well, he earned two championships with the ZSC Zurich Lions in domestic-league play. The Lions not only won the Swiss league championship, they also won the Champions Hockey League title.

Swayman led the Americans to an historic gold medal at the World Championship in Stockholm, their first since 1933. He posted a 7-0 W-L record and a save % of .921. At home, Swayman had a 22-29-7 W-L-T record and an .892 save % in the NHL with Boston.

Czech star David Pastrnak led the WM in scoring with 15 points in eight games and was named Directorate Award Best Forward and WM All-Star Team/Forward. In the NHL, he finished fourth in regular-season scoring with 106 points with the Bruins.

Swiss forward Denis Malgin also helped his country to a silver medal at the Men’s Worlds and tied for the tournament lead with 10 assists in as many games. Along with Andrighetto, Malgin also won the double of Swiss league championship and Champions League titles in league play with Zurich.

MacKinnon tied for third in WM scoring, recording 13 points in eight games with Canada in Stockholm. In the NHL, he was second in scoring during the regular season, amassing 116 points with the Colorado Avalanche.

Thompson was part of the American gold in Stockholm and co-led the team with six goals in ten games. In the NHL, he had a sensational season with the Buffalo Sabres, scoring 44 goals, tied for third-most during the regular season.

About the Award

The IIHF Male Player of the Year Award is given every year to a player who has best demonstrated exceptional skill, determination, team success, and sporting character on and off the ice during the most recent season.

The player must have competed in at least one IIHF tournament at any level this season (Men’s World Championship, World Junior Championship, Men’s U18 World Championship) as well as in a domestic league of the highest calibre for that country, the combined performances of which are considered superior to all other players. Career achievements have no merit in the voting. Candidates must be selected based only on this past year’s achievements.
